Iain Fraser

Iain's fascinated by the fiddle’s rhythmic and emotional capabilities and draws upon an extensive repertoire ranging from 18thC. Scottish tunes to new self-penned compositions, and from the multiple regional music styles of the British Isles to those of North America and Europe.

He was principal fiddle teacher in the Scottish Music Department of the RCS between 1995-2005 before being appointed Head of Instrumental Music for the Scottish Borders until 2011. He left this post to become a director of The Merlin Music School.

In 2022, he composed and recorded a new CD ‘Gneiss’, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Fèis Rois’s annual adult teaching festival and in 2023 he wrote & released ‘Kōterana’, celebrating the multiple 19thC. migrations of Rev Norman McLeod and his followers from Clachtoll to Waipu. Also in 2023, he released his first book of tunes: ‘Lochinver No More’
